Dr Ritam Prasad

Dr Prasad is a clinical and laboratory haematologist with interest in all aspects of haematology. He currently works as a Staff Specialist at NSW Health Pathology and Calvary Mater Newcastle.

 

Dr Wojt Janowski

MBChB FRCPA FRACP

Wojt (“Voit”) is a clinical and laboratory haematologist whose main areas of work are malignant haematology and thrombosis. He is an active clinical trialist, and the local principal investigator on numerous national cooperative group and international research trials. He is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, and a member of various research steering committees.

In addition to the Clot Clinic, he is a Staff Specialist at Calvary Mater Newcastle, and has private rooms in Gateshead.

Dr KARAN MAKHIJA

MBBS FRACP FRCPA  

Dr Karan Makhija is a Clinical and Laboratory Haematologist with a keen interest in all aspects of Haematology, including management of patients with blood count abnormalities, paraproteinaemias, thrombosis, lymphoma, myeloma and leukaemia. 

Karan works in both public and private Haematology practice. He works as a Staff Specialist at the Calvary Mater Hospital and Manning Base Hospital, as well as in private practice at Hunter Valley Haematology and the Clot Clinic in Cooks Hill.

Karan obtained his medical degree in sunny Queensland with an Academic Medal and subsequently completed Physician Training through The Townsville Hospital and The Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. He went on to pursue dual training in both clinical and laboratory Haematology at the Calvary Mater Hospital and John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, awarding him Fellowships of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia. 

Timely and effective communication with GPs, patients and their families is something which Karan greatly values.

 

Dr Kate Melville

BMed FRCPA FRACP

Kate is a specialist haematologist with a special interest in consultative and malignant haematology. She is dual trained in clinical and laboratory haematology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia.

Kate completed her haematology training within the Hunter New England and Northern Sydney Health Districts. She currently works at the Calvary Mater Newcastle as a Staff Specialist as well as in the group practice of Hunter Valley Haematology in Gateshead.

Her interests include general and obstetric haematology patients including those with thrombosis and malignant haematological diagnoses.

She is actively involved in the education and supervision of medical students, junior doctors, and other medical professionals.

 

Dr Jane Gordon

BMed FRCPA FRACP

Jane is a specialist haematologist. She sees patients with a broad range of haematology problems, including abnormal blood counts, clotting or bleeding problems and malignant haematology conditions.

Jane has a long association with the Hunter, graduating from the University of Newcastle in 1997 and completing medical and haematology training in the region’s hospitals.

She is currently a haematologist at Calvary Mater Newcastle and has private rooms in Gateshead. Previously, Jane was a consultant haematologist at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney.

Her laboratory grounding allows her to make sense of sometimes complex test results and explain what they mean and what to do.

She has been twice awarded by the RCPA, with the DS Nelson and Roche Haematology Prizes.

Dr Gordon has contributed to medical education in the community, hospital and university fields, within the University of Newcastle, University of Sydney and the Centre for Professional Medical Development.

Jane values clear and timely communication with colleagues, patients and their families.

 
 

DR KATHERINE RANKIN

Dr Alex Holmes is a clinical and laboratory haematologist with a broad-interest in all aspects of haematology. Born and bred in Newcastle, he graduated from the University of Sydney before undertaking his speciality training years at St Vincent’s, Calvary Mater, John Hunter, and Royal Hobart Hospitals. He is a fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. He has now returned back to Newcastle where he works as a Staff Specialist at the Calvary Mater Hospital and NSW Health Pathology, Hunter Valley Haematology, and an appointment at the University of Newcastle. Alex also has admitting rights at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital. He delivers teaching at all levels of medical training and is available to provide ongoing education to GPs and nurses. Alex is a compassionate and caring physician who is dedicated to providing his patients with the best possible care.  

dr Jon Sillar

B.Eng/B.Com MBBS FRACP FRCPA

Dr Jon Sillar is a clinical and laboratory haematologist and a fellow of both the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia. Jon grew up in Newcastle prior to completing his medical degree at The University of Sydney in 2010. He undertook junior medical training at The Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, prior to returning to Newcastle to focus on Haematology training. Following completion of his advanced training in Haematology, Jon went on to complete a leukaemia fellowship at the prestigious Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Canada, gaining valuable expertise in managing patients with acute leukaemias and myeloid neoplasms. He has been a Staff Specialist Haematologist at the Calvary Mater Newcastle since 2021.

Jon treats both malignant and non-malignant haematological disorders. He has a particular interest in managing patients with acute leukaemias and myeloid neoplasms, including myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloproliferative disorders, and has a keen interest in the workup of patients with unexplained cytopenias.

At the Calvary Mater Newcastle, Jon is actively involved with clinical trials for patients with myeloid neoplasms, including acute myeloid leukaemia, myeloproliferative neoplasms (polycythaemia vera, essential thrombocythaemia, primary myelofibrosis) and myelodysplastic syndrome.

Jon is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle with an active role in teaching medical students, junior doctors and advanced trainees in Haematology.

dr alex gordon

MBBS FRACP

Dr Gordon graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2012, completing his medical internship and residency at the Lyell McEwin Hospital in South Australia. He moved to the Hunter Region in 2015 for basic physician training, followed by advanced training in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at John Hunter and Gosford Hospitals, acquiring his Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians at the start of 2021.

He is currently enrolled in a PhD focussing on the use of medications to modify the body’s immune response in airways diseases such as Asthma and COPD. He has a special interest in airways diseases, venous thromboembolism and all aspects of sleep medicine.

He lives on Lake Macquarie with his family and is the proud father of two young boys. He loves getting out on the lake with friends and family or camping and hiking around the greater Hunter area. He’s also a lifelong lover of music and still finds time to play mandolin professionally locally.
